Classical Compositions

Below is a selected list of some of my contemporary-classical compositions for various ensembles and performers.

Three Movements for Brass and Percussion (2015) – a work for standard brass quintet (2 trumpets, French horn, trombone, tuba) and two percussionists (drum kit and timpani) – 9 min

Cocaine Nights (2015) – eight movement work for mixed wind & brass ensemble with jazz trio (flute, clarinet, sax, contrabassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass & drums/vibes) Inspired by the book of the same name by J.G. Ballard and first performed on May 12th 2015 in the Dora Stoutzker Hall with the composer playing the guitar part. – 20 min

Five Ukrainian Preludes (2015) – five preludes for solo guitar (commissioned by and dedicated to Domenico Johnson) – 12 min

Distortions (2015) – for oboe, clarinet/bass clarinet, violoncello and percussion (commissioned by Sinfonia Newydd in conjunction with Artes Mundi 6 and first performed at Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff, the work is a response to a video installation by Karen Mirza and Brad Butler entitled ‘The Unreliable Narrator’) – 10 min

Silent Dancers (2014) – for string quintet (2 violins, viola, violoncello & double bass) (commissioned by Sinfonia Newydd) – 15 min

Espejitos (2013) – for solo guitar (commissioned by and dedicated to Jonathan Parkin) – 8 min

Four Piano Preludes (2013) – solo piano (first performed by Jack Hughes) – 8 min

Spangled Cotinga (2013) – for chamber orchestra (commissioned by Sinfonia Newydd to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the death of the Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera) – 9 min

Percussion Suite (2013) – four movement work for three percussionists (vibes, marimba and drum kit) – 11 min

Ignition (2012) – for bass clarinet and percussion (commissioned by Sinfonia Newydd in conjunction with Artes Mundi 5 and first performed at the National Museum of Wales, the piece is a response to the artwork of Sheela Gowda)  I spoke to Asana Greenstreet about the piece, the interview with her can be heard on the Wales Arts Review website. – 5 min

Portraits from Ystradgynlais (2012) – three movement work for five clarinets & piano (commissioned by Sinfonia Newydd, the work is a response to two paintings by the artist Joseph Herman) – 12 min

Ninkasi (2011) – three movement work for wind quintet (received a performance in 2012 by the brilliant Danish group Ensemble MidtVest, the title is a homage to the ancient Sumerian goddess of beer) – 8 min
